Fire Classification

1. For practical purposes fires may be classified in four groups.

2. The knowledge of the fire classification is very important.

3. It helps the firemen in the fire protection activity.

4. Class “A” fires involve ordinary combustible materials.

5. They are wood, cloth, paper, rubber and certain plastics.

6. They can be extinguished with water or water solutions.

7. Class “B” fires involve flammable liquids, gases, oils, greases and similar products.

8. They can be extinguished by cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire.

9. Class “C” fires involve energized electrical equipment, such as appliances, conductors, transformers, so on.

10. The extinguishing agents must be nonconductive.

11. Class “D” fires involve combustible metals, such as sodium, magnesium, titanium, lithium, zink, etc. They are extinguished by heat absorbing agents that do not react with burning metals.
