The telephone is an important part of the communications systems. It helps us to settle a lot of questions staying at home or at the office.

There are different types of telephone calls. You can phone on business or your telephone conversations can be private when you want to speak to your relatives or friends.

You can also make a call to get information, to reserve a room at a hotel, to book a ticket or to dinner at a restaurant and so on.

In any case you have to remember some rules how to be polite over the telephone.

  1. When talking on the telephone – speak clearly. Do not shout and take your cigarette out of your mouth.
  2. Make your conversation with a busy person as brief as possible.
  3. When calling a friend who does not recognize your voice – do not play “Guess who?” announce yourself promptly.
  4. When you get a wrong number – do not ask: “What number is it?” It is a good manner to ask: “Is this two-three-four-five-six?” if not – apologize.
  5. If a wrong number call comes through don’t lose your temper. Simply say: “Sorry, wrong number”, and hang up.
  6. Always introduce yourself when making a call, especially if you are calling on business, e.g. “This is Mr. Volkov of the Ukrainian trade mission. Could I speak to Mr. Jones?”
  7. If you have a visitor do not carry on a long chat. The best thing to do is to say you are busy at the moment and… “May I call you back in a little while?” But don’t forget to do so.
