1. O. Henry's style is noted for his unusual phrasing, his use of slang, the quaint way he has of putting things. He is fond of using unusual and unexpected word combinations, distorted words, puns, literary allusions, of coining words, all of which produces a humorous effect, the humour of surprise as some critics call it. And we often feel that O. Henry chooses some imaginary narrator to tell the story, as though it were not the author but someone else who has that peculiar way of putting things.

2. Among the lexical expressive means used by O. Henry in "The Green Door" we find two sustained metaphors: "Neat, but extreme poverty was the story he read" and

"... hers, indeed, was the one missing face from his heart's gallery of intimate portraits."

3. In the sentence: "Two streams of people filled the sidewalks — the home-hurrying, and that restless contingent that abandons home for the specious welcome of the thousand-candle-power table d'hote" the word " table d'hote " is used instead of the word " restaurant ". It is an instance of metonymy which is a figure of speech by which the name of one object is given to another, not by way of comparison (as in metaphors), but because one suggests the other by some logical association (I know Dickens – Dickens’ works). There are other instances of metonymy in the story: "... and she began to tell him her little story. It was one of a thousand such as the city yawns at every day." " City " is used instead of the people who live in it.

"The first floor... seemed to house millinery or furs. " The last two words are used for a shop where millinery or furs are sold.

The sentence in which " table d'hote " is used is quite typical of O.Henry's style — his way of using unusual words and combining them in an unusual way.

4. In the words "the quick breath of true adventure" and "... it was the hand of Fate that doped out a way for me..." we find another figure of speech — personification, a special kind of metaphor which represents an inanimate object or an idea as having human characteristics, as capable of thought, action or feeling. Note that the word " Fate ", as well as the concluding words of the story (" Romance " and " Adventure "), are written in capital letters.

5. Interjections always express some emotion, thus conveying the speaker's or narrator's attitude.

6. Punctuation, used for stylistic purposes, comes under the category of graphic stylistic devices, and is widely employed by authors.
