Fear of Flying
Grigory Rozhkovsky, a top-class psychotherapist, gives suggestions as to how to lessen the fear of flying. Every seventh person has such a great fear of flying, that he or she avoids flying altogether, and if there is no way out and he or she has to fly, then they can even experience the symptoms of panic which can lead to a temporary disruption of some of the important bodily functions.
Panic sets in against the background of the mounting fear of flying and may be accompanied by the following symptoms: difficulty or impossibility to take a good deep breath; insensibility in the limbs; accelerated heart beat, body shake, heavy sweating; heaviness in the chest and pain in the heart; feeling of unreality, disorientation, failing to understand what is going on; some people in such states experience a feeling of being close to death or to insanity.
Those who suffer from bad attack of "aerophobia" should not be ashamed to admit it - there are many others who fear flying. It may be helpful to analyse this fear and try to determine what caused it initially - traumatic experience, stories of air crashes, terrorists' attacks, and so on. Once the underlying cause has been determined, you can concentrate on the ways of overcoming your fear. Some pieces of general advice may come in handy:
1. Arrive at the airport an hour or two before the flight so that you will have ample time to check in without hurry - you do not want any additional stresses that may heighten the fear of flying.
2. If you feel anxiety is getting hold of you, take deep, even breaths; you help reduce the level of adrenalin in your blood; besides, when you concentrate on breathing, you focus on something that is unconnected with flying and thus lessens the fear of it.
3. If you suffer from aerophobia (fear of heights) avoid sitting by the window.

4. Listening to music, reading, knitting, playing a game also may help.
5. Find appropriate arguments aimed at reducing the fear of flying - the planes are built to pass all kinds of emergency situations; the plane you are on has been tried in many flights and has proved to be absolutely safe; the pilots are experienced and confident; the ground services have thoroughly checked all the systems of the plane, etc.
Try to see yourself with somebody else's eyes, smiling and relaxed. Tell the imaginary person who seeks your advice. Feel the satisfaction of having been able to help.
Comfort your fellow passenger and yourself.
Have a good flight!
