THE UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated (расположено) on two large islands and about 5 thousand small islands to the North-West of Europe. They are called (называются) the British Isles.

The larger island is Great Britain which consists of three parts: England, Scotland and Wales, and the smaller is Ireland. Southern Ireland now is the Irish Republic, it is independent of the United Kingdom. The British Isles cover an area of about 95 000 square miles. The English Channel separates Great Britain from the continent. The narrowest part of it is the Strait of Dover.

The Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the Irish Sea wash the country. The shallow waters of the North and Irish Seas provide good fishing grounds. Fishing therefore is very important.

Mountains are" an" important feature of the geography of the* country. There" are mountain chains in Scotland, Wales and North-West England, but they are not very high. North-West England is also

famous for its beautiful lakes.

The rivers of Great Britain are not very long but usually deep and never freeze in winter. The longest and deepest rivers are the Severn and Mersey, the Thames on which stands the capita] of Great Britain — London. Britain has a mild temperate climate. The climate of the British Isles is generally cool, temperate, though in the Highlands of Scotland it is severe. The best season for the English people is spring when everything is in full bloom, there is much sunshine and it is rather warm. Autumn and winter are famous for their fogs and rains. In big industrial cities fog turns into "smog" (smoke+fog). It is a very unpleasant time. The usual temperature in winter very seldom falls below 3-5 degrees Centigrade. The weather in Great Britain is very changeable, there may be all kinds of weather within one day, that is why practically every talk-the English people begin with comments on the weather.

Britain is a state with a highly developed industry. It is one of the most powerful capitalist countries in Europe. Great Britain is also one of the largest exporters of manufactured goods. At the same time it imports metal, oil, grain, meat, fruit, tea and other raw materials and foodstuffs.

School education in Britain

The British school education today offers a free education to all children between the ages of 5 to 18.

At the age of five the children start their compulsory education and between the ages of 5 and 11 they go to primary school. They attend a different class according to their age and there are about 30 children in each class, on average.

At infant school (from 5 to 7) the children become acquainted with reading, writing and arithmetic in the form of games. The emphasis is on learning through experience and much of the time is devoted to (посвящается) playing, drawing, painting and music The infant school lays only the foundation in reading, writing and arithmetic and tries to create an interesting beginning to these complicated learning processes. Today's classrooms are very different from 40 years ago few classrooms have desks nowadays Children sit at tables which are grouped into (сгруппированны по) six or eight places. And all classrooms are bright, exciting places There are children's paintings on the walls, models on the side and children have bookshelves at their level.

Most junior schools (from 7 to II) still carry out a policy of streaming, that is to say, the children are divided into (разделены на) an A-stream, of the cleverest, a B-stream, of the next in ability, then comes a C-stream - which is the lowest in most schools

When children are 11 years old, they go to secondary school. In Britain, the state provides a secondary education for all children between the ages of I! and 16 and a school or college place for them from 16 to 18. After the age of 16, a child may finish school legally

Pupils who wish to enter a University or a college of higher education stay at school up to the age of 18.

Today, over 90 per cent of the state secondary school population in England and Wales go to comprehensive-schools, that is state schools that are open to pupils of all abilities The Comprehensive School provides all types of secondary education for all children in a district, irrespective of their supposed intelligence

OXFORD UNIVERSITY.

Oxford is not an industrial centre, but it is famous all over the world as educational centre The oldest and the most famous university is situated (расположен) in Great Britain.

Oxford University is unique British institution. For centuries the preserve of the country's political and business elite. Oxford combines exceptionally high academic standards with an atmosphere of wealth, privilege and intellectual brilliance.

If the visitor to the City of Oxford is a stranger, he probably asks someone to direct him to "the University". To this apparently simple question there seems to be no simple answer. Libraries, lecture rooms, museums, the botanical gardens: they are all parts of the university, but they are not exactly its "centre". But if the visitor asks for a particular college, he will he directed (его.направят) at once to a specific group of buildings. Those doorways' and courtyards belong to"colleges" which have an actual, physical existence. The "university" is a more elusive concept.

The structure of Oxford University (together with Cambridge) is unique in that it preserves the mediaeval university organization. You must imagine a federation of autonomous republics with a common foreign policy (dealings with the government and other universities) and with a common budget (money from the government and from other

national and international sources) and a set of common values (the teaching of undergraduates and graduates and the pursuit of scholarly research), which are at the same time fiercely independent "republics" with their own funds, their own students, their own projects and enthusiasms Despite its venerable age, Oxford is emphatically not a museum Each building is alive Even more important, both the University and its colleges are very democratic institutions What is it like, being a student at Oxford' Like all British universities, Oxford is a state university, not a private one. The most successful candidates are admitted (поступают) to a specified college of the university: that will be their home for the next three years (the normal period for an undergraduate degree), and for longer if they are admitted (поступают) to study for a postgraduate degree. Oxford is international, because people all over the world come to study there.
