Description of the ship

The main part of the ship is the hull. This is the area between the main deck, the sides- starboard side and port side and the bottom. It is made up of frames. The hull is divided up into a number of watertight compartments by decks and bulkhead s. Decks divide the hull horizontally. Those dividing up cargo spaces are known as “ tween deck ”.

The hull contains the engine-room, cargo space and a number of tanks.

In dry cargo ships the cargo space is dividing into holds, in liquid cargo ships it is divided into tanks. The space between the holds and the bottom of the hull contains double bottom tanks. In case of a special type of cargo such as fruits, meat and other perishable goods, special refrigerating holds are made for stowing.

The accommodation above the main deck are known as superstructure. For traditional dry cargo ship main superstructure consists of navigating bridge and a funnel is placed on the amidships, above the main deck. For modern ships the engine room and the main superstructure are situated at the after end of the ship to leave more space to load cargo There are five decks on many ships. The engine room is below the first deck. There are three rooms on the first deck: the galley, the laundry, and the storeroom. Above the laundry there is a hospital.

Vessels designed for carrying cargo must have cargo handling gears for loading and discharging cargo.

All ships have lifeboats and means for hoisting and lowering them.
