Firefighter Karen Bell

Прочитайте:
  1. Add some more examples for each type of firefighters’ activity.
  2. Karen Bell

1. I was a ski instructor for a number of years and I also worked as a disability employment adviser for the Department of Work and Pensions..........

2. Physical work had never frightened me and it was clear to me that the fire brigade offered me the opportunity of an excellent career and....... I can truly say that I enjoy every aspect of my job, whether it be putting up a smoke alarm for an elderly resident, tackling a fire or showing a group of children around the fire engine.

3. No two days are ever the same. I enjoy the ‘family’ life of the fire station and.... Shift work doesn’t suit everyone but it suits me perfectly. Working two days followed by two nights allows me to spend concentrated quality time with my family.

4. Working for London Fire Brigade is not.... Thanks to the extensive fire safety work that the Brigade does, the number of fires we attend has actually reduced considerably over the years. The bulk of my time is spent doing fire safety work out in the local community. We also attend other emergencies such as road traffic accidents. Working as a firefighter doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to spend all your time working at a fire station either. There are many opportunities - I work with the Positive Action Team to encourage people from different backgrounds to consider a career as a firefighter.

5. If you enjoy working with the community, as part of a close knit team for a disciplined organisation this could be the job for you. The training is 17 weeks long and.....so you need to be disciplined enough to study on your own and maintain a high standard of physical fitness.

6. London is the most diverse city in the world and host to millions of international visitors each year. Therefore it’s vital that..... Having different people from a range of backgrounds increases our ability to connect with the public in what, for them, can be really stressful circumstances.

Notes:

disability n – инвалидность

reduce v – сокращать

bulk n – объем

background n – социальная группа (зд.)

maintain v – поддерживать

represent v – представлять

increase v – увеличивать

circumstance n – обстоятельство

9. Different parts of an interview with a firefighter have been all jumbled up. You have to put them in the right order matching the questions and the answers:

1. What were you doing before you joined the Brigade?   A. You should research the role of a firefighter, be passionate about your desire to join and make sure you work at improving your fitness.
2. What made you apply for a job with the London Fire Brigade?   B. Besides fighting fires, we regularly visit schools, shopping centres, nursing homes and other places to talk about fire safety. We also visit people in their homes where we check their smoke alarms.
3. What’s the best thing about your current job?   C. Since leaving school at 16 I’ve mainly worked in an office.
4. Is your job all about fighting fires?   D. I wanted a complete change and help people.
5. Do you think it’s a job where you can make a real difference to the community?   E. No two days are ever the same. You never know what to expect when you wake up in the morning and every day at the end of the shift it’s great to know that you’ve made a real difference to people’s lives.
6. What advice would you give to anyone thinking about a career with the London Fire Brigade? F. To make a real contribution to the community we work in, we visit schools and interact with children showing them that fire is dangerous.

10. Match the questions and the answers of the interview with Robin Brown, who is a fire chief.

The questions are the following:

1. When you were a little boy, did you dream about being a fire-fighter?

2. How long have you been a fire chief?

3. So, what does a fire chief do?

4. How many fire engines do you have?

5. How many fires did your department put out last year?

6. What other kinds of jobs do firefighters do?

7. What is the best part of your job?

8. What is the worst part of your job?

Answers:

a) I have been the fire chief for more than two years.

b) It is satisfying to know that the work we do helps to prevent some fires and injuries before they happen.

c) It is important to understand that putting out fires is not the only thing we do. We respond to emergency medical calls and rescue calls. We also teach classes in schools every year and help businessmen in our city keep their buildings safer.

d) We have sixteen engines that are used to pump water at fires. We also have a hazardous material unit, a rescue unit, and seven brush trucks that we use for grass fires. We even have a boat that we use for water rescues!

e) I always thought that a firefighter was an exciting job. I grew up respecting the work that firefighters do and admiring them for always helping people, but I didn't know I would ever be a fireman myself.

f) In 2012, we put out 448 building fires. We also extinguished 688 grass fires, 381 vehicle fires, and 24 other kinds of fire.

g) I would have to say that the most unpleasant part of my job is seeing people, particularly children, who are hurt and suffering. When we are on the scene of an emergency, our firefighters feel that hurt, too.

h) Most people probably think that a fire chief is in charge of every emergency scene, but that's not true. There are other people in my department who are responsible for emergency incidents. I like to think of my job as the boss of a really large company. I spend a lot of my time on the types of things that other bosses do: developing a budget, planning for the future, and solving problems.
