UNIT 6. FIREFIGHTING OPERATIONS
Firefighting is the act of extinguishing fires. A firefighter prevents loss of life, destruction of property and the environment. Firefighting is a highly technical skill that requires professionals who have spent years training in both general firefighting techniques and specialized areas of expertise.
Points for discussion:
1. Working together with your partners, recall and make up a list of firefighters’ duties?
2. Try to explain how new technologies have modified the character of firefighters’ duties. Which duties have emerged recently?
3. Which technical skills have become indispensable?
4. Discuss the way firefighters’ activities are connected with the life of the community?
5. Do firefighters have any educational duties?

Prevention – engaging with London’s community to inform and educate people in how to reduce the risk of fires and other emergencies. Example: home fire safety visits.
Protection – influencing and regulating the built environment to protect people, property and the environment from harm. Example: regulation of building.
Response – planning and preparing for emergencies and making an effective response to them. Example: response dwelling fires.
Personnel Management – working together to deliver the highest quality service. Example: training programs.
