When a person has a fire, they ring telephone 999. In Essex, all calls are transmitted to a central control at Brentwood. In that control room a specialist staff, who work a shift system, take all the calls and once the call is received, they have a visual aid which assists them within the area. A call comes in to a specified area. The staff in the control take the call, find out the area that the call is required for, press certain buttons which sound the fire alarm in the station concerned for that area. And the fire station itself answers the telephone, takes the name and the address where the call has occurred and then immediately responds to the call. When firefighters leave the station, they book mobile on the radio to tell the control that they are on their way to the fire. When firefighters get to the fire, they tell the dispatchers that they've arrived, with certain coded messages. Once the officer in charge of the fire has ascertained the extent of the fire, then he will send back again a coded message. If it's a chimney fire, it would be a code 3. If it's a grass fire a code 4. A false alarm (good intent) – code 2. A false alarm – code 1. A small fire – code 6. And that's how it's transmitted. If it's a big fire, they also mobilize senior officers, and therefore they would send for assistance messages and these are sent through the control, to the fire. A senior officer would be at the control at the fire and he would dispose of the appliances as he required them.
