Tornadoes are one of nature's most violent storms. In an average year, about 1,000 tornadoes are reported across the United States, resulting in 80 deaths and over 1,500 injuries. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 110 miles per hour (177 km/h) and are approximately 250 feet (76 m) across. The most extreme tornadoes can attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than two miles (3.2 km) across. According to some researchers tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes and can occur anywhere in the U.S. at any time of the year. In the southern states, peak tornado season is March through May, while peak months in the northern states are during the summer. Thunderstorms develop in warm, mois t air in advance of eastward-moving cold fronts. These thunderstorms often produce hail, strong winds, and deadly tornadoes. Some people think that areas near rivers, lakes, and mountains are safe from tornadoes. But in reality no place is safe from tornadoes. People try to survive opening the windows before a tornado approaches to equalize pressure and minimize damage. Practice shows that opening windows allows damaging winds to enter the structure. We recommend you to leave the windows alone; instead, immediately go to a safe place.
