22. Read the following fire reports and discuss in groups how many crew and fire engines must be called to these emergency calls. See File A for the answers:
1. A fire in a detached house. Firefighters were called to a fire in a house on Tollington Park in Finsbury Park, N4 yesterday evening. Half of the first floor was damaged by the fire. A small part of the second and third floors were also damaged by the blaze. The Brigade was called at 1850 and the fire was under control by 2001. Fire crews from Holloway and Stoke Newington fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A fire at a petrol station. Four people, including a child, were taken to hospital last night following a fire at a petrol station on Great West Road in Isleworth. A petrol pump and two cars were destroyed by the blaze and two women, one man and a child were taken to hospital. It’s thought they were suffering from shock and minor injuries. Firefighters quickly got to the scene and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the petrol station. Fire engines from Heston and Ealing fire station attended. Firefighters were at the scene. The police were also there. The Brigade was called at 2245 and the fire was brought under control at 2335. The cause of the fire’s smoking.
3. A fire in a block of flats. Fire engines and firefighters were called to a fire in a four storey block of flats on James Voller Way in Stepney, E1. Around 15 people escaped the fire before the Brigade arrived. Part of the external cladding of the building from the ground to fourth floor was damaged by the fire. There was smoke affecting all four floors of the building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried out a search of the building and do not believe anyone has been injured. The Brigade was called at 1618 and the fire was under control by 1929. Firefighters from Whitechapel, Old Kent Road, Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is dangerous cooking.
