5. Read the text and underline the names of vehicles with a red pencil and the items of the equipment they carry with a green pencil:
This is the conventional fire apparatus (also called a fire appliance, fire tender, fire engine, water ladder, pumper and pump-ladder).
It is the most common front line appliance deployed to all emergency calls. It carries and pumps water, rescue and cutting equipment, ladders to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and other rescue operations.
| There are aerial appliances, used for effecting rescue from high-rise structures. Perhaps the best-known forms of specialised aerial apparatus are turntable ladders (TL) an a hydraulic platforms (HD).
| A turntable ladder (TL) is used to gain access to fires occurring at height using a large telescopic ladder, where conventional ladders might not reach. A hydraulic platform (HP), is a large crane fitted with a caged platform which can be hoisted to heights well over 30m in some cases. The platform may be raised to windows or balconies to rescue people. Both appliances are capable of providing a high level water point for firefighting.
| Rescue Tenders (RT). It’s a generic term for any fire appliance which carries out a «heavy» or «specialist» rescue role. Essentially giant toolboxes on wheels, they are primarily designed for technical rescue situations such as vehicle extrications following traffic collisions, confined space rescues, rope rescues, swiftwater rescues, or building collapses. The equipment it carries varies depending on where it is deployed. It may carry cuttig equipment for use at road traffic collisions or other transport incidents.
| Many fire departments covering large metropolitan areas or those containing many high-risk hazards keep specialist appliances for dealing with hazardous materials (HazMat). These are of several types, from those used to clean spilled oil on streets and highways, to full decontamination units, designed to clean victims and rescuers of contaminants after an incident.
| This is a mobile laboratory, these units can attend a wide range of incidents, including chemical spills and fires, where scientific analysis and monitoring will speed up the detection process and allow firefighters and other emergency services to provide the correct response for the particular incident.
| A Command Unit is used for very large-scale incidents. A fundamental advantage of such an appliance is to accommodate the many different types of communication equipment needed at major incidents. In addition to the wide range of radio frequencies used, fire chiefs often need to send and receive information via satellite links and CCTV of the ongoing situation. The command vehicle can essentially be used as an on-site conference centre for command personnel, mapping and planning firefighting operations and directing crews as they arrive.
| This is a tanker truck, which can also be known as a water tender. It is a special fire appliance with the primary purpose of transporting large amounts of water to the fireground to make it available for extinguishing operations. These are especially useful in rural areas where fire hydrants are not readily available and natural water resources are insufficient or difficult to use. There are foam tenders. They carry large amounts of foam to be used at incidents where water is ineffective or cannot be used to tackle a blaze. They may take the form of a tanker, or a truck carrying foam packets or barrels.
