Fire Protection in the United Kingdom
1. At present, Fire Protection in the United Kingdom is being fulfilled by 63 consolidated fire brigades and three small brigades.
2. They serve the Isles of Man, Juernsey and Jersey.
3. Most of Brigades correspond to counties.
4. The system of consolidated brigades works very well. There are highly developed fire data systems in Great Britain.
5. All fire brigades fill out a form on each fire incident and send it to the Home Office.
6. The data are keyed into a computer and used to compile national statistics.
7. There are full-time, part-time and volunteer firemen.
8. Most of them are full-time firemen.
9. Volunteers exist in only a few remote areas in England and Wales and the islands of Scotland.
10. The national government plays an important role in British fire protection.
11. The British Home Office sets standards, undertake research, and provide quality control.
12. The Fire Safety Division develops national policy on fire protection and prepares changes in fire safety legislation.
13. It develops fire safety materials, issues guidance for managing fire risks in certain high-risk occupancies, such as cinemas and storage facilities.
14. Of particular interest is the fire Research and Development Group.
15. Its scientists solve practical problems of firefighting and prevention.
