Incendiary Fires in Chicago and Puerto Rico

School fire prevention and fire protection efforts were greatly enhanced by the tragic fire at Our Lady of Angels School in Chicago on December 1, 1958. This fire, in which 95 lives were lost, was reported to be of incendiary origin. The old multistory structure was of ordinary construction. A delay in turning in an alarm within the building compounded the tragedy. Tremendous efforts to upgrade school fire prevention regulations throughout the country came as a result of this fire. Many schools were provided with automatic sprinkler protection.

1986 midafternoon New Year's Eve fire struck the Du Pont Plaza Hotel and Casino in San Yuan, Puerto Rico. The fire resulted in 96 fatalities and over 140 injuries. This 20storey, nonsprinklered hotel contained a ballroom on the first floor, casino on the second floor, and various shops, restaurants, and conference rooms

Fire consumed the contents of the first - floor areas and was primarily confined to that level. Investigation revealed that the fire had been deliberately set in a large stack of recently delivered furniture that had been temporarily stored in the ballroom.

The government of Puerto Rico convened a commission to study the need for improvements in fire safety code. The commission report brought about improved fire safety standards.
