Exterior of the structure. Examine the exterior of the structure and note fire damaged areas such as:

1. Identify area(s) involved on your arrival.

2. Note fire damage to exterior of building.

a) Look for area of most intense burning.

a) Look for lowest area of fire damage.

3. Examine charring a smoke deposits over doorways and windows.

4. Look for the evidence that the fire may have started on the outside of the structure.

5. Overall view of the fire scene.

6. Look for suspicious sign of arson.

Interior of the structure. As a general rule one should begin the exterior examination from area with little or no damage and working towards the areas with the most damage according to the following procedures:

1. Start with the lightly smoke stained areas moving towards the heavily smoke stained areas.

2. Proceed from areas of light heat damage towards areas of heavy heat damage.

3. Move to the most severely burnt area.

This area should be the place where the fire originated, and the investigator should check the following:

a) To establish the lowest point of burning in the room.

b) Look for the direction of heat flow as configuration of the origin.

c) Check the floor damage and extensive charring (usually approximately one -third of that of the ceiling area in accidental fire).

d) Search for physical evidence and clues.
