Historic Buildings

Buildings that are considered to be historic have some qualities revealing the problems and progress of society, Such buildings give the visitor an opportunity to visualize the life and environment of those people who had lived before us. Year by year some of this heritage disappears because of fire.

The preservation of old buildings is a matter of great importance because of their unique historical associations. However, present-day use brings the necessity of satisfying present-day standards of safety for the occupants of, and visitors to the historic buildings. In the general context of culture and education it is accepted that the preservation of historic buildings is of utmost significance to the European heritage. Therefore, to prevent, or minimize the risk of fire becomes essential. Historic buildings are varied in age, use, construction and condition but all share the common threat of damage or destruction by fire.

The threat of fire to historic buildings is now accepted as a serious problem. But an almost equal threat is the impact of fire precaution measures to the architectural and historic integrity of the built heritage. Now spaces, materials and construction systems in historic buildings that do not comply with present- day standards cannot be modified or removed easily because of inevitable destruction of the historical integrity of the building.

The essential qualities of historic buildings are their antiquity and uniqueness. The more valuable a building becomes the more vulnerable it becomes from a fire safety point of view.

The problems of fire safety in historic buildings are wider than those associated with life safety directly. A general description of the fire safety problems in historic buildings recommends a careful analysis of the whole situation of the building.

To achieve an appropriate and adequate standard of fire safety process of survey, fire risk analysis, design of fire safety system and valuation of system need to be completed.
