According to NFPA records, more than half of the reported fires in educational facilities from 1980-1996 were "incendiary or suspicious" in nature. This percentage is even higher for secondary schools.

There are, however, many steps schools can take to increase protection from arson.

First, a building's security measures (i.e., preventing unauthorized people from entering or loitering near the building) should be included in the school's overall arson prevention plan. Keeping doors locked after hours and regularly inspecting mechanical or electronic locking devices for proper operation are also important. However, these locking devices must not prevent exit from the building.

In addition, areas around the building susceptible to the accumulation of waste or clutter should be well lighted and should receive close, regular attention. Minimizing the accumulation of waste paper, boxes, dirty rags, or other waste inside the building should also be a fire prevention goal. While these items may naturally accumulate during the school day, it's important to have collection containers located throughout the building and have them emptied at regular intervals. Furthermore, storage rooms containing combustible items such as paper, cloth, or cleaning solvents, should also be kept clean.
