Исследование сложных респираторных физиологических процессов требует применения большого количества функциональных тестов. Нет какого-либо отдельного теста исследования респираторной функции, предоставляющего желаемую информацию по отдельному пациенту. В то же время не нужно использовать все имеющиеся тесты в программе исследования единичного пациента. Некоторые тесты очень просты и должны проводиться каждому пациенту с подозреваемой или установленной сердечно-легочной патологией (спирометрия), так же как выполняются исследования артериального давления, ЭКГ и др.

Легочные функциональные тесты позволяют оценить влияние заболевания на респираторную функцию, и не дают возможности поставить точный диагноз, тем не менее они являются важной и необходимой частью клинического обследования пациентов.

Физическая нагрузка требует существенного напряжения и тесного взаимодействия основных физиологических механизмов, которые делают способными сердечно-сосудистую и респираторную системы поддерживать возрастающие метаболические потребности организма. Обе системы в этом случае находятся в состоянии стресса, и способность адекватно реагировать на этот стресс является показателем их физиологического здоровья и функциональной полноценности. Хорошо известно, что и вентиляция и сердечный выброс повышаются по мере возрастания скорости метаболизма. Адекватная оценка функционального состояния системы транспорта газов, необходимых для поддержания тканевого (клеточного) дыхания очень важна, так как при многих патологических состояниях функционирование этой системы нарушается.
